INTRODUCTION
Summer Savory, a half-hardy annual that self-sows freely, has a strong, hot and slightly bitter flavor reminiscent of thyme, and retains a particular affinity with peas and beans, broad beans especially.
Both types of herb originates from the Mediterranean region and were much in demand by the Romans, who introduced them to Britain. Savory was said to be stimulated and, as such, is thought to be an effective aphrodisiac.
Summer Savory grows to be height of 45 cm and 15 cm across. It has an untidy, straggling habit. The leaves are long, narrow, and dark green, rather like soft pine needles. Its flowers are small, pale mauve, and insignificant, and bloom well into the autumn.
